Solar Transients and Space Weather

Udaipur Solar Observatory, Physical Research Laboratory (USO-PRL), is organising a focused solar physics meeting, on the lines of the PRL Vikram Discussions, on “Solar Transients and Space Weather” on 28–29 September 2026.
The Vikram Discussions at PRL are a series of focused scientific meetings designed to foster in-depth scientific discussions, facilitate interactions across different areas of research, and provide an environment for initiating collaborative research projects.
The choice of September for this meeting is particularly meaningful. The month marks several important milestones in India's solar and space research, including the foundation of Udaipur Solar Observatory, the launch of Aditya-L1, and the commencement of scientific observations with the Solar X-ray Monitor (XSM) onboard Chandrayaan-2.
These milestones reflect the growing breadth of India's capabilities in solar and heliophysics—from ground-based observations to X-ray astronomy, remote sensing of the solar atmosphere, and measurements of the solar wind and interplanetary environment.
The meeting therefore provides an appropriate occasion to bring together researchers working on solar transients, their manifestations across the heliosphere, and space weather, with an emphasis on connecting observations, physical processes, and emerging scientific opportunities.
The meeting will centre around four interconnected themes:
- Solar X-ray Astronomy in India: Current Capabilities and Future Prospects
- Solar Atmospheric Phenomena: Processes, Dynamics and Transients
- Space Weather
- New Insights from Aditya-L1
- Industry–Academia Interaction and Collaboration
The meeting is intended to be focused and discussion-driven, providing ample opportunity for scientific interaction, particularly among younger researchers and emerging research groups. By bringing together complementary observational, theoretical and modelling perspectives, the discussions aim to identify common scientific questions, explore new collaborations, and initiate future joint research programmes.
The meeting will thus provide a platform to connect India's rich legacy in solar physics with the new observational opportunities offered by Aditya-L1, Chandrayaan-2/XSM, and contemporary ground-based facilities, and to strengthen collaborative efforts towards understanding the Sun and its influence on the space environment.
